VPD Calculator

VPD Calculator

Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) is a measure of how hard the air is "pulling" moisture out of your plants. Too low, and the air is too humid — plants can't release excess water, which raises the risk of mold and disease. Too high, and the air is too dry — plants close their pores to conserve water, which also cuts down how much they can grow. This calculator shows you where you stand right now, and compares it to the target range for your plant's current growth stage, since the ideal VPD shifts as a plant matures.

How to use it: Enter the temperature at the top of your plants (the "canopy") — not just the room's ambient temperature — and choose °F or °C. Enter the current humidity around your system. Choose the growth stage your plant is in right now: Seedling, Vegetative, Flowering, or Late Flower/Ripening. Click Calculate VPD, and your result, a status message, and the full stage-by-stage target chart will appear on the right.

How to Adjust Your VPD for Optimal Plant Growth

Now that you know your number, here's how to fix it if it's off. Our full VPD guide covers this in depth, but the short version: adjusting humidity is far more efficient than adjusting temperature, since changing temperature takes a lot more energy. If you're growing in a tent, a swamp cooler (an evaporative cooler) can help, but a home AC unit cools your entire living space—not just the grow area. You're welcome to experiment with temperature, but remember that humidity will need to be adjusted to match.

Use a Humidifier

A quality humidifier can make the difference between a thriving grow and one that struggles. Many novice growers mistakenly attribute plant health issues to nutrient deficiencies, when in reality, improper VPD levels are often the root cause. Adding a humidifier is the fastest and most cost-effective way to maintain an optimal VPD range. Even if you're not growing in a tent (which we highly recommend), proper VPD management is still achievable.

Tools for Adjusting VPD

  • Humidifier – Raises humidity to match your VPD target. Warmer temperatures often require higher humidity.
  • Dehumidifier – Lowers humidity if it becomes excessive, helping maintain the ideal range.
  • Fans – Improves air circulation, distributing temperature and humidity more evenly. Reducing hotspots.
