Welcome

Welcome, Grower!

Congratulations on taking your first step. Here's everything you need to get started.

    What Hydroponics Actually Is

Hydroponics simply means growing plants in nutrient-rich water instead of soil. No dirt, no guesswork about what your plants are getting — just clean water, the right nutrients, and light. It sounds technical, but once your system is set up, it's one of the easiest and most reliable ways to grow your own food at home.

    Choosing Your System (Featuring Gardyn)

There are several types of hydroponic systems out there, but we recommend Gardyn to almost every new grower we talk to. It has a small footprint that fits in an apartment or a kitchen corner just as easily as a garage, and it takes a lot of the guesswork out of growing basic crops like lettuce and herbs. It's also the system our own 3D-printed accessories are built specifically to support — so as you grow, your gear grows with you.

    Choosing the Right Location

Your system needs consistent light, stable temperature, and reasonably steady humidity — plus easy access to water and a power outlet. You don't need a greenhouse; a spare corner near a window or under a grow light works fine. If you want to get precise about humidity and temperature balance, our VPD Calculator can help you dial it in.

    Understanding the Real Costs

We'll be upfront with you: getting a system, lights, and your first round of supplies together is a real investment. But once everything's in place, your ongoing costs are surprisingly small — mostly just nutrients and the occasional water change. Growing your own food isn't free to start, but it's genuinely inexpensive to maintain.

    Water Chemistry & Nutrients 101

Plants in a hydroponic system get everything they need directly from the water, so water chemistry matters a lot more here than in a soil garden. That's exactly why we created Root Balance, along with our V1 and V2 nutrient line — to keep your water chemistry stable and your plants properly fed. If you want the deeper science behind it, our Chemistry collection has everything you need.

    Picking Your First Plants

Start simple. Leafy greens and herbs — lettuce, basil, mint — are forgiving, fast-growing, and a great way to build confidence before moving on to fussier crops. Once you're ready to branch out, our Plant Guides walk you through specific crops step by step.

When Something Goes Wrong (and It Will)

Every grower runs into a hiccup eventually — yellowing leaves, slow growth, cloudy water. It's normal, and almost always fixable. We've built a whole library of troubleshooting guides so you can diagnose the issue and get back on track quickly, without the panic.

    Gear That Makes It Easier

Once you're comfortable with the basics, our 3D-printed accessories — like the Hydropod and yCube-compatible supports — are designed to make your Gardyn system run smoother and grow more. They're not required to get started, but they're a natural next step once you know your system. We also have curated some tools that make maintenance easier like a water transfer pump and 2.5gallon jug all available in our Recommended Products section.
