Prepping a Used Grow System

Prepping a Used Grow System

This guide has no fluff. No deep dives. Just clear, actionable steps to get your used Gardyn running cleaner, stronger, and smarter. Whether you’re upgrading or just refresing a used system, this guide breaks everything down so it’s easy to follow and quick to implement—especially if you prefer not to rely on the app for water management.

🧼 Step 1: Deep Clean with Citric Acid

  • Mix 1/2 cup of 100% pure citric acid with 1.5 gallons of warm water.
  • Run the solution through the system for 30–60 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any residue.

Optionally: You can disassemble the system and soak your parts in the same solution.

🔄 Step 2: Replace Irrigation Lines

  • Swap out all irrigation lines with fresh food-safe tubing.
  • Check for kinks or blockages and ensure tight connections.

💡 Step 3: Test the Pump and Lights

  • Plug in the pump and verify water circulation. If it’s noisy, weak, or inconsistent—replace it.
  • Confirm lights are functioning and responsive via the app. These are typically more reliable than the pump.

🚀 Upgrade Options for Better Growth

🌬️ Hydropods for Faster, Healthier Roots

  • Replace yCups with Hydropods to improve air:water exchange.
  • Promotes stronger root development and prevents rot.
  • Requires more frequent watering (every 15–30 minutes), so plan for a timer setup.
  • Use Hydroton + rockwool for optimal root zone aeration.

🔁 Replace the Pump for Reliability

  • Upgrade to the VIVOSUN 800GPH pump for adjustable flow and quiet operation.
  • Offers higher lift and better durability than the stock Gardyn pump.

🧢 Use the Lip Lid + Adapter Combo

  • Install the Lip Lid Adapter Combo to connect the new pump to Gardyn hoses.
  • Allows power cords to exit through the refill port—no drilling required.
  • Blocks light to reduce algae growth.

⏱️ Automate Watering with a Repeat Timer

  • Pair your pump with this interval timer.
  • Set watering cycles (e.g., 3 min on / 20-30 min off).
  • Works independently of the app and keeps water flowing even if the app glitches.

Lights will still be controlled via the app, which is generally more stable than the water system.

💧 Optional (But Highly Recommended): Aeration Boost

💨 Add an Aeration Pump

  • Use a wavemaker pump to circulate water and improve dissolved oxygen.
  • Enhances nutrient retention and reduces biofilm and algae.
  • Helps regulate reservoir temperature.
  • Can run on its own timer or share the pump’s timer depending on your intervals.

🫧 At Minimum: Use a Bubbler

  • An air pump with an airstone like this one can also be used instead of, or in conjuction with, the wavemaker.
  • This is will not need a timer as you can keep this running at all times.
  • All of the benefits of a wavemaker pump but less water movement
